Max Verstappen made a powerful statement in Austin, taking pole position for the Sprint race of the United States Grand Prix. The driver for Red Bull capped his qualifying with a remarkable late lap, overtaking McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, setting the stage for another thrilling competition at the Circuit of the Americas.
This impressive lap was a clear reminder that Verstappen remains a formidable competitor, finishing just 0.071 seconds ahead of Norris, illustrating that he is always in the mix, even when McLaren seems to have the upper hand.
How Did Max Verstappen Perform in Austin Yesterday?
Initially, things appeared promising for McLaren as Lando Norris led the charge, drafting the early pace during practice and the first two rounds of qualifying. “It’s been a nice qualifying,” Verstappen expressed following the session. "We were quite close throughout all segments. In the end, it was about executing when it counted most, which can be tricky, especially when switching to the soft compound without any previous data to guide you.”
This qualifying effort marks his third Sprint pole at the Circuit of the Americas, further adding to his impressive resume in Texas. The climax of the session highlighted a gripping performance not only from Verstappen but also from Norris, who pushed hard, but in the critical final corners, the Dutchman found just enough speed to clinch the top spot.

McLaren Remains in the Race
Even with the outcome not entirely in their favor, McLaren can hold their heads high following another strong qualifying showing. Norris, while slightly disappointed with missing out on pole, accepted the results with a smile, acknowledging the current speed advantage of Red Bull.
“Of course, I’m disappointed not to have taken pole, but it’s no surprise that we were a tad slower than Red Bull recently,” Norris remarked. “There were just a few minor details where I could have improved, and I hit some bumps slightly wrong—a tricky aspect of this circuit. Overall, I’m feeling optimistic.”
Oscar Piastri, starting from third, admitted that his lap didn’t meet his expectations, saying, “It was a bit of a messy lap, to be honest. I feel somewhat lucky to secure third place. The car’s pace is solid, but I need to tidy up my performance for tomorrow.”
In the battle for starting positions behind the frontrunners, there were some intriguing developments. Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg made a notable impression, qualifying fourth and continuing his strong performance from earlier this year. George Russell and Fernando Alonso secured fifth and sixth positions, respectively, while Ferrari faced another disappointing outing, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finishing eighth and tenth.
However, not everything went according to plan for Red Bull. Verstappen’s teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, faced yet another challenging session, being eliminated in Q1 after a chaotic out-lap, which placed him in 18th—a further setback in what has been a frustrating season for him.

“It all worked out well today. I’m looking forward to tomorrow and pleased with today’s success, but we’ll see how we perform in the race,” Verstappen concluded.
